entering 05

Nature has certainly given us a few things to ponder about as the year ends and 05 starts. Tonight in some places there will be fireworks and drinks galore, in Asia, it will be a gloomy evening at the beach fronts where many a new years have been ushered in, in pomp and ceremony. I remember watching the breaking news and having my gut twist in knots as the reports streamed in and praying that Devrim, Joe and other pals are all safe.
We are beginning a year on a different note in a few years and while there are no words of comfort that can take away the grief and pain of the people of SEA, I can only trust that the heavens provide sufficient graces for them to deal with the losses. Perhaps within the same universe that rose the storm layeth enough positive karma to restore the peace of mind of the masses.
I'll be back in that region next Tuesday so for now, Happy New Year.
Im off to make me some resolutions that I will probably forget in a jiff...

What would your first line be?

The other day an acquitance (well under the influence of frothy substances) asked me, 'if you had to write a book about yourself, what would the first line be?'
Now thats a question that requires some proper thinking. All of the nomads have been places, done things, accomplished some, lost some...the list is endless so thats a question I'd like to toss about the group. Its a good one to chew on over the festive season and probably a useful thought when 05's resolutions are being drafted. Ofcourse those resolutions have also been known to be forgoten soon after they are typed out but so we do not digress, If you had to write a book about yourself, what would the first line be?
El acquintance still awaits, me, still thinking-perhaps this shall come to me as I sat under that acacia tommorow.

On the countdown, 8 hours to check-in, 10 hours to take off, tommorow at a time like this, I will be in African skies...paumbawe paumbawe paumbawe...

let the countdown begin

...in about 24 hours ill be aboard an emirates plane heading for Africa...man! the emotion in all this is more than incredible...let the countdown begin...bags a'packin now! ...I bless the rains down in africa , gonna take some time to do the things we never heard ....(Toto!)

Chicken chop?!

I'm constantly amazed by the ingenuity of the Asian kitchen. The other day Sue and I head off to lunch and decide to try a new place. This is ofcourse a highly ambitious plan given the fact that our office is in the 'bundus'....so we find this new restuarant, small and cosy-clearly a family unit probably owned by a guy call Lee who also doubles as the finance controller&auditor&proprietor, his wife Ah Lien who doubles as chef and waitress(greasy apron and sweat inclusive), your table will probably be busted by their son/daughter/nephew who will rush you through the menu, take your order and most likely get your order wrong on the first BUT I digress...There's an array of dishes on the menu and being a friday, chicken chop served with french fries, black pepper sauce and fresh garden salad sounds like the way to go. Sue goes with the spaghetti bolognese(minced chicked edition-again only in Asia ) and then the wait begins. 1 ice lemon tea later, spaghetti on the table-the quantity is wanting but one hopes the quality will make up for it. Wrong!, this particular plate would make the Italians declare war on this peninsular for defamation..2nd ice lemon tea and chicken chop is still missing. Please note that all the while lots of fried rice and noddle dishes are whizzing past us. Patience has always been a virtue of mine and just before christmas, my plate arrives and at that point I could cry. There is no way that measly, greasy piece of meat can be classified as chicken chop! a few bites and I throw in the towel. I should have gone with the rice after all it is the International Year of Rice(I kid you not! this is a UN initiative). With 2 icelemon teas quickly heading for the bladder we quickly settle the bill and leave, 'brushing the dust off our feet at the door'. I think to myself,'chop' should be left to 4 legged creatures; lamb chops, beef chops even zebra chops if you want...just leave out the birds man por favor. There isn't enough flesh on a bird for you to 'chop'!..It sounds nice on the menu but doesn't really cut it. It's one of those scenarios where size does really matter....Oh and I should also add that the fresh garden sald turned out to be one small, withered leaf that tasted like a cross between cabbage+lettuce+parsley..eeiww!

stuff,stuff and more stuff...

There's nothing funny about witnessing an accident! nothing at all!
There I was minding my own business walking from the mall, about to embark on crossing a major highway (yes we can do that..I'm from a developing country!), nibling on the greatest pastry temptation in Malaysia a 'mexican bun' (i dont think the mexicans know about this one), locally known as roti boy (
www.rotiboy.com), recalling a funky chat I just had with Joe, workload that was causing major havoc on my chi(im in Asia, im allowed to use the whole ying & yeng vybe) was off the desk and was actually going home early, soundtrack in my head ..u get the drift. So I get to the sidewalk and im waiting for traffic to ease up so I can do the dash across..Im also watching a motorbike (2 occcupants) on the other side of the highway attempting to do a diagonal across the highway...fleeting glance in the direction of traffic and then wham! bang! screech!damn! motorbike down, one rider rolling on the ground, other guy under the car...cars backs up, quick action, injured in car, life goes on....
Now things like that make you think and think very very hard! ...whats best is anyone who arrived at the scene 2 minutes later had no inkling of what happened..the dudes will survive, they were'nt bashed too hard...in short life does go on and its also very very short....

Don't misread me, im not spreading negative karma, just spreading some hope for sharpness on the road....Which reminds me - if anyone has experienced traffic in Cairo, they can identify with the concept of 'disorganised mayhem'. I was an odd one, I took public transport there and ofcourse my team thought I was nuts (they may have had a point at the time), if you've never seen a survival for the fitness contest between drivers and pedestrians, then get to Cairo pronto and try crossing the road....many a hairs were raised trying to get to work and back....
As we start off our xmas stories, word from the bank manager is he doesn't want to see my face, 'Yu know good for business loh' he thinks. Im running close to a negative account but I have this grin across my face because its the result of a shiny ticket to the city of Nairobi via Dubai yuh baby!!! Im so headed for home ...come sunday evening i'll be watching an African sunset, under that acacia tree, listening to some local tunes and basking in the adoration of family and friends..as we used to say in Cairo...Inshallah!

nth attempt

frustrated and tired is not a good way to start a blog. Definitely not a good way to meet new people either. But when your are, you are and such is my current state. The only inspirational thing that my system can choke up right now is ..wherever you are make sure you leave the office as per the policy hour. I should ofcourse set the trend and get out myself, I hear they call it 'leading by example' well for this week and the last and the last and the next up to n, the concept has been distorted for me....the biggest word in my mind right now, MINDBLOCK! I have ofcourse chosen to intepret it as a sign from the universe ...see those flying arms/skirts/bag/whosh of wind..yuh thats me gone! gone like a prom dress!
Hello people of the world, this kenyan is here to blog away!
parting thought...what did you do for world peace today?
