Colombus bites the dust in Venezuela...again

Incredible! I cannot believe I forgot to post on this one.

Last week, in a discussion on post colonialism, this very interesting article from some goings on in Venezuela came to light. While Chavez has been in the limelight lately for a number of things, I have to give him some props for some of the moves.
Certainly I feel the pain of the education fraternity who now have to review texts BUT I suspect in years to come, history will be filled with some very interesting stories and if done well in a manner to preserve the heritage of the locale then it should make for a very good read!

Some immediate thoughts that come to mind as we were debating over the article and the image in it were;
a) Is the 'lower-half' of the world starting to fight back?
b) What will be the position of chaps like Colombus x years from now if this trend of 'getting erased' prevails? Will they disappear into historical oblivion and be replaced by 'modern time heroes' who will have 'erased' them?

Hmmm...I muse on..

Adjustments, maladjustments and sundances!

If someone knows of a magical spell, special soup, pills, happy juice or whatever else that would ease the adjustment from a 8am-5pm day to student life, please let me know where any of those remedies can be purchased!
Its not that I dont like homework or reading but its a whole new regiment and after x yrs out of the system one needs abit of time to get with the program. Submission of 2 topics and outlines for the first 2 papers are due next week. SO the current Q&A session going on in my head sounds something like this...
Am I panicking? No.
Do I have them ready? No
Should I have them ready? Well at least by Monday.
Its Saturday evening now, so should I be panicking? Errrrmmm

On another note perhaps I should also apologise to all those who requested that weather dance(because im African and apparently we have those)to increase the number of sunshine hours or in most cases to bring about some sunshine hours. It is evident thus far that my jig has had no impact on the situation. I followed all the steps but I think you need a saxon weather dancer for this one. If you find one please send him/her the memo. I'm willing to tip the piggy bank for this sort of a cause.

More than 1000 words...

Thats what they say about pictures. They leave an impression more than words could ever describe.Sometimes you come across an image that leaves an impression so big and yet one cant resist the urge to add words to it. This is my picture of the year scanned off a postcard cover collection from almost a year back.

It makes me think of past, present and future; of Confucius and his band of men; of great friendships that last a lifetime; of a bonds strengthened by hardship and yield; of spending one's twilight years with trusted friends; of a lone musician sitting atop a verdant green hill playing a flute while the wind blows gently, the daisies dance in the wind, the sunset is glorius and the river snakes its way through paddy fields in the valley below; of God and His awesomeness; of the importance of man living in harmony with his kind and nature; of gentleness; of wisdom; of a life well lived; of living life to its fullest; of men of valour and women of virtue and honour; of the circle of life; of things beyond my understanding...of more than a thousand words.

Truly random musings

Bombs are going down over some parts of middle east and parts of Africa, In Turkey there is a fight for secularisation(dont know if that is a real word), Putin is putting his feet down over the US in Russia, the fight against Mungiki is on in Kenya, Global warming discussions and how to save our planet are ensuing even in China and then.......there is the Vodka battles currently going on in Europe. I tell you man, human beings are incredible and the world would be soo boring without this diversity of thought. Thankfully I'm allergic to that stuff..hic!:)

Why is it that Oxymoron is not the definition for someone who is stupidly high or low on Oxygen?

The other day we saw an advertisement for anti bacterial keypads. We thought it was a random joke until only now I have googled and found that it is not just a concept but a ...properly patended idea. So now we can get bacteria from our own keypads..what about the mice(plural of mouse ofcourse), and the screen..I mean, apparently there are no limits to the creativity of man...I am highly highly amused by all this.

Random musings

Its been too long indeed and this come back is going to be majorly random so buckle up..
Yesterday I was browsing through a Kenyan local daily and came across an article that made me want to break something.Apparently now, x numbers after I am out of the system, they are working on an alternative syllabus that allows students to pick subjects that they are interested in instead of the mandatory subjects that were slammed on us. What this directly translated to for me was it means I can now opt random stuff like Physics out(one of the most random subjects in my opinion) and stick with the kool stuff like Bio. Now why is it that this realistion took so long to get here? Seriously? We grew up stuck in a system where you had to take a certain number of subjects even if you hate them or dont get them.My dream of being a doctor was flushed down the lavatories of physics and pythagoras theorems which have no direct bearing on my life(I think)..seriously, think about it, when did you ever find yourself going, 'hey mum, dont sit on that side of theboat because pythagoras said....' OR 'kids, tommorow I shall mix the H2O with the Carbonmonablabla with a splashing of (whatever the chemical formula of eggs is) and voila we shall have pancakes!'....My point=make education practical. Something that I'm glad is finally going to happen. If I dream of being a pilot, allow significant amount of time in the curriculum to have me hanging around hangers and cockpits and yes the lwas of gravity would be useful for this guys BUT if all I want to be in life is a music producer, what does Pythagoras or the law of bouyancy have to do with my ability to churn out a tune?! Enuff already..I'm truly looking forward to the new curriculum..seeing as its in my career interest to orient myself with all things educational...A sigh of relief is being breathed here by this soul..big ups to the guys behind this manouver and hoping it does take off...
What's that they say, render to the the scientists what is Pythagoras's and to the artisitic minds what is Picasso's!

Colleactive/Creative? nouns

New words/expressions/vocab e.t.c have always fascinated me and I find myself more drawn to the thesaurus. A discussion about a rendezvous with a friend led me to the oh-so wonderful world of collective nouns. That was one of the terrifying lessons in grammar class back in the day but me thinks I have a solution for that. For starters;

What do you call a group of proctologists?
A buttload of proctologists ....hahahahahahahaha
(Arrrmm incase you missed the joke, a proctologist is basically a doctor who deals in matters of the butt/arse)

What do you call a group of prostitutes?
An anthology of prostitutes

These were my top 2:) and before you conclude that I have way too much time on my hands, check out the sources of these hilarious collections of collective nouns
I also found some truly mind boggling ones like 'An ex cathedra of professors emeriti', 'A scare of Security Engineers'(true true! I work in a firm with those types and it can get quite scary )

So then the myth that collective nouns are boring is well BUSTED!

I belong in Paris?

Now then, I found this little gem on this gorgeous Indian gal's blog and so I decided to give it a shot. The results are shocking! Apparently I belong to Paris??

You Belong in Paris

Stylish and a little sassy, you were meant for Paris.
The art, the fashion, the wine, the men!
Whether you're enjoying the cafe life or a beautiful park...
You'll love living in the most chic place on earth.

Not that I have been there but something tells me that assessment is flawed...hmmm

Get a personality?

I had a hearty discussion with a friend yesterday which ended up at the question, what kind of chics do you go for? To which he quickly responded...someone with a PERSONALITY. Sounds quite basic eih? So I asked, personality like how? That was followed by the usual n minutes of one struggling to answer this in the best way possible(there is always copious amounts of you know, you see, get it?) and I realised how many times we actually use umbrella words like that without actually zeroing in on the real answer.
Now if you have ever answered that question in the same way, raise your hand. Yes you, I see you. If your hand aint raised, I'm impressed but not convinced:).
Thus I went on a quest to find out the meaning of having a personality..you know just incase you need to know this in order to define your relationships (get rid of someone, get together with someone, find an excuse to not be with someone e.t.c)..Ok this is clearly random..but moving on.

So then, a personality....there are 50 million descriptions/synonyms e.t. ranging from the psychlogical stuff like character, traits, behaviour all the way to the random/gramatical stuff like celebrity. So basically having a personality goes from someone's set of characteristics TO being Brad Pitt, Will Smith or whoever else falls into that celebrity category.

So then, if you are keen to find it if you have a personality, you may want to check some definitions Definitions of personality on the Web

After reading some of these, I have to add that is a very nasty thing to say to someone that they lack personality...I think?

Sigh..I'm so random...
