Chicken chop?!
I'm constantly amazed by the ingenuity of the Asian kitchen. The other day Sue and I head off to lunch and decide to try a new place. This is ofcourse a highly ambitious plan given the fact that our office is in the 'bundus'....so we find this new restuarant, small and cosy-clearly a family unit probably owned by a guy call Lee who also doubles as the finance controller&auditor&proprietor, his wife Ah Lien who doubles as chef and waitress(greasy apron and sweat inclusive), your table will probably be busted by their son/daughter/nephew who will rush you through the menu, take your order and most likely get your order wrong on the first BUT I digress...There's an array of dishes on the menu and being a friday, chicken chop served with french fries, black pepper sauce and fresh garden salad sounds like the way to go. Sue goes with the spaghetti bolognese(minced chicked edition-again only in Asia ) and then the wait begins. 1 ice lemon tea later, spaghetti on the table-the quantity is wanting but one hopes the quality will make up for it. Wrong!, this particular plate would make the Italians declare war on this peninsular for defamation..2nd ice lemon tea and chicken chop is still missing. Please note that all the while lots of fried rice and noddle dishes are whizzing past us. Patience has always been a virtue of mine and just before christmas, my plate arrives and at that point I could cry. There is no way that measly, greasy piece of meat can be classified as chicken chop! a few bites and I throw in the towel. I should have gone with the rice after all it is the International Year of Rice(I kid you not! this is a UN initiative). With 2 icelemon teas quickly heading for the bladder we quickly settle the bill and leave, 'brushing the dust off our feet at the door'. I think to myself,'chop' should be left to 4 legged creatures; lamb chops, beef chops even zebra chops if you want...just leave out the birds man por favor. There isn't enough flesh on a bird for you to 'chop'!..It sounds nice on the menu but doesn't really cut it. It's one of those scenarios where size does really matter....Oh and I should also add that the fresh garden sald turned out to be one small, withered leaf that tasted like a cross between cabbage+lettuce+parsley..eeiww!

hey what happened to cultural understanding and haven't you heard of localization of globalization?! haha whatever that means.
hey just though you might want to know that your blog looks weird in my browser; your profile is at the bottom compared to where it's supposed to be on the top right.
lets hang out together for more drinks when you are back from x'mas and home sweet home - Kenya!
Aehem... MI amiga... do you REALLY want to get ME started talking about what these naive people ignorantly call "STEAK"? Nope, right?
So let's play safe and order whatever looks NOT fried, fishy or extremely spicy on the menu: OOLONG TEA and cookies.
Note: beware of those sugar glazed ginger rice crackers, diceving little "beatches"!
